Behavioral Therapy (BT) has the ultimate goal of bringing an unbalanced or sick dog back to a state of balance and well-being by teaching them new behaviors. The implementation of BT involves training, which plays an essential role in the therapy.
The field of “Behavioral Medicine” deals with physically and/or mentally ill dogs, where often behavior therapy alone is not sufficient due to impaired cognitive abilities caused by pain, lack of socialization, or other factors. In such cases, extensive examinations are necessary to exclude or treat any underlying physical causes. In some instances, supportive medication treatment is essential to enhance the dog’s mood and learning ability or to establish them in the first place.
A consultation, as in any veterinary medical field, consists of an anamnesis (medical history), general and further examinations, description of symptoms and clinical signs, followed by a report of findings, diagnosis, treatment plan, and often follow-up consultations to assess progress and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.
I can help with dogs experiencing fear-related issues, aggression problems, and overexcitability. I can also assist with addressing unwanted behaviors, medical training, fostering a positive relationship between children and dogs, puppy training, and the process of acquiring a new dog.
Typically, a home visit takes place to familiarize the therapist with the natural environment and the living situation. Online appointments can also be arranged.
The compensation is calculated according to the veterinary fee schedule (GOT, Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte):
- Home visit: €34.50
- Medical history (anamnesis): €30.78
- Consultation per hour according to §8: €121.92
- Additional travel distance (per double kilometer): €3.50
If you have pet health insurance, the consultation is usually recognized and covered.
